In this lesson we
will take a look at a four minute clip of the movie Sully (2016) based on a real event: the forced landing of an airplane
in the river Hudson in January, 15th 2009.
You will learn
vocabulary related with airplanes, as well as some technical concepts such as
the IATA codes, three letter (or two
letter and one number) codes used to name airports around the world.
After watching the
clip, take a look at the vocabulary below
and then answer some questions to
check your understanding.

VOCABULARY
On time: punctual, punctually.
La Guardia: airport located in Queens, New York who gets its
name after the former New York Major Fiorello
LaGuardia. Its IATA code is LGA.
JFK: IATA code of New York´s main airport
named John F. Kennedy.
To fly out: to leave for somewhere by plane.
Take off: the moment when an aircraft leaves the ground and begins to fly.
On board: on a ship, aircraft or other vehicle.
Runway: a long, level piece of ground with a specially prepared smooth, hard
surface on which airplanes take off and land.
Gear:
in a vehicle, a gear is any of several limited ranges of power that are used
for different speeds.
To get over: to accept an unpleasant
fact or situation after dealing with it for a while.
Catch on fire: to ignite and burn with flames.
To shut down: to stop operating.
Turbulence: strong sudden movements within air or water.

Keep your seatbelts on: to stay with your seatbelts locked.
Ignition: the electrical system in the engine that causes the fuel to burn or
explode in order to start the engine.
APU (Auxiliary Power Unit): device on a plane that provides energy for functions
other than propulsion.
Double check: check two times in order to make sure there are no
mistakes.
Seat belts are fastened: seat belts are locked.
Strike: hit.
Mayday: a special radio signal sent from a ship or an aircraft when it needs
help.
Thrust: a sudden a strong push.
Departure: the act of leaving somewhere.
Unable: to not be able to do something.
Emergency landing: is a prioritized landing made by an aircraft in response to an emergency.
